Lionfish species are extremely invasive and their introduction within new regions has resulted in significant ecological and socio-economic impacts. For this reason, the Spot the Alien Fish campaign is implementing an Early Warning System (EWS) for these species, by offering a free, brand new GoPro 12 model to the first confirmed sighting or capture of a lionfish species from Maltese waters. Such a report needs to be accompanied by verifiable evidence, including good-quality photographs, video clips or, better still, the actual specimen itself. This campaign is being done in order to manage, as from the earliest of stages, the imminent invasion of Maltese waters by lionfish species, given that Pterois miles (the devil firefish) has been repeatedly sighted along the coast of Tunisia and Sicily in recent years. The species is well-distributed across many swathes of the eastern Mediterranean.
